With the 4th of July just around the corner, outdoor activities will increase the risk for heat exhaustion. Because extreme heat can strike anywhere and anytime, it is important to keep hydrated and stay cool when possible. Come up with a plan as you are scheduling your day and be sure to have plenty of supplies to keep you hydrated and cool. And most importantly, be safe with fireworks.
Prepare Your Home
- Keep your home cool with shades, draperies, awnings, or shutters to reduce the amount of heat that comes into your home.
- If you have air conditioning:
- Install weather-stripping and storm windows to keep heat out and cool air in.
- Make sure your air conditioning works properly before the summer months.
- If you have no air conditioning:
- Open your windows and keep fresh air moving through your home.
- Use circulating fans to distribute cool air.
Prepare yourself outdoors
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit yourself to minimal activity in direct sunlight
- Watch out for others who may be at risk for heat exhaustion
Fireworks Safety Tips
· Use fireworks outdoors only.
· Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
· Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket).
· Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
· Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
· Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
· Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter."
· Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
· Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department.
